Cdntinued...
my godchildren in, because they had
be en beaten by their father. I needed a
hc use with some bedrooms, and I needed a
decent home, and every place I looked I
could not afford what was decent or what
I could afford was miserable. And I
la-ew a person who rented a house over
he e and she asked me to come over and
it. That's where you go and you
11 up your windows and you lock your
doors. That's not any place for a
single woman with some children to be.
BLt she convinced me to come here, and
we came I saw mansions. We came down
Washington and I saw mansions. And all
e way up to my home were nice homes.
And I began to think, "Well, this isn't
bad." , And when I saw the house it
was beautiful. Formal dining roam. And
I could afford it. I thanked God for
it. and I took it.
We
3 when I brought my father here, he
irate. How could I bring him into
Ls black neighborhood? He had never
m around black people before. He was
k. And when he started to get well,
walked out in front of the house
:ause he was scared to death to walk
?place else. But you know what
opened? When he walked outside, the
ighbors started yelling, "Howdy,
ighbor!" and they came down and asked
n how he was. They knew he was sick.
i he began to love those neighbors,
i next thing I new, he was coming to
very excited and telling me, "You
ow the people who are always sitting
the yard, dawn in the next block?
:y asked me up for lemonade. And the
r next door walked with me on my
k. And the gentleman dawn the street
its to go fishing with me." And he
; me in love with the neighborhood.
all did.
-50-
