I needed a <br />hc use with some bedrooms, and I needed a <br />decent home, and every place I looked I <br />could not afford what was decent or what <br />I could afford was miserable. And I <br />la-ew a person who rented a house over <br />he e and she asked me to come over and <br />it. That's where you go and you <br />11 up your windows and you lock your <br />doors. That's not any place for a <br />single woman with some children to be. <br />BLt she convinced me to come here, and <br />we came I saw mansions. We came down <br />Washington and I saw mansions. And all <br />e way up to my home were nice homes. <br />And I began to think, "Well, this isn't <br />bad." , And when I saw the house it <br />was beautiful. Formal dining roam. And <br />I could afford it. I thanked God for <br />it. and I took it. <br />We <br />3 when I brought my father here, he <br />irate. How could I bring him into <br />Ls black neighborhood? He had never <br />m around black people before. He was <br />�k. And when he started to get well, <br />walked out in front of the house <br />:ause he was scared to death to walk <br />?place else. But you know what <br />opened? When he walked outside, the <br />ighbors started yelling, "Howdy, <br />ighbor!" and they came down and asked <br />n how he was. They knew he was sick. <br />i he began to love those neighbors, <br />i next thing I new, he was coming to <br />very excited and telling me, "You <br />ow the people who are always sitting <br />the yard, dawn in the next block? <br />:y asked me up for lemonade. And the <br />r next door walked with me on my <br />k. And the gentleman dawn the street <br />its to go fishing with me."
