Mr. Gilot noted he received the documents and circulated them
to the Board but has not heard back from the other Board members yet and this is not on the
agenda. He explained the Board needs more time to review and discuss his request for the
extension of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. He noted as long as Mr. Schoby was present, maybe
he could answer some questions and clear up some confusion on what he is requesting. Mr. Gilot
asked him if his request was for Michigan St. running through downtown to be renamed Martin
Luther King Jr. Drive. Mr. Schoby confirmed that is what he is requesting, adding it should be
the center of the downtown and include the Morris Performing Arts Center location. He noted
the current location is a State Highway, U.S. 31, and the new location should run parallel to the
state highway, extending to the north and south to the highway. Mr. Gilot asked Mr. Schoby
what he is requesting in his second request to rename Charles Martin Drive, adding he didn't see
a proposed name for that location. Mr. Schoby stated that is the location of the first black radio
station, WUBS and it should be named in honor of that. He stated Charles Martin should be
moved to Cottage Grove St. Mr. Gilot asked if he asked anyone living on Cottage Grove St. to
get a petition together to see if they support that. Mr. Schoby stated he didn't, this shouldn't have
been done to begin with, it was a mistake. Mr. Gilot asked if he was requesting to rename the
street to WUBS St. or after someone associated with the station. Mr. Schoby stated he needed to
check with Sylvester Williams, adding he defers to him. Mr. Gilot noted Martin Luther King Jr.
Drive was named where the Century Center and South Bend School Corporation are located, two
of the most visited sites downtown. He added the Board would take his request under
advisement.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the Board, upon a motion made by Mr. Gilot,
seconded by Ms. Dorau and carried, the meeting adjourned at 10:48 a.m.
BOARD OF PUBLIC WO1;CKS
a
Maradik, Member
Therese J.
