REGULAR MEETING February 25, 2019
to where the piles are. They're not fifty (50) feet tall like those that are over on McKinley. We
would do that additional landscaping if Council would want us to, that would be fine. If there are
additional questions, let us know.
Councilmember Gavin Ferlic stated, I don't know what the appetite is tonight, I guess I drive by
the current concrete site and I think it looks pretty well-maintained for an industrial site. And I
don't know the difference between that and the site in the County. My understanding from talking
to the business owners is that it is substantially different. We do have heavy industrial zoning in
our City for businesses, and this is the use of the property that would employ eight (8) people. I
get the sense that the Council probably would not want to approve this tonight, and if this is the
case, I would encourage another continuation possibly, again, written commitments, something
working with the neighborhoods to see what is acceptable.
Councilmember Oliver Davis asked, One (1) of the challenges that you face over there that is
different from Kuert, we created a roundabout. One(1) of the things the roundabout did was sped
up traffic tremendously on Sample Street going west. It is very fast. I get my hair cut over there, I
don't even like coming out of there because they're coming down so fast. It is coming off that hill.
Speed and then you can look down and see everything over there. We can see it,because that side
of town is the hilly side of town. Rum Village has hills and then you come off the hills, so you
would literally see it. There is no way you are going to put a screen up to cover up the fact that
we're going to see that hill, and it creates problems. She made a great point. You get behind one
(1) of those trucks, Lord have mercy. You go that way and you're behind a truck, and you go the
other way and you have a train. We're trying to fix up the noises on the south west side, because
it was all of that industrial, but we've made a tremendous amount of improvement there over the
last few years and we want to continue to go that way. I am glad for the roundabout, but it has
really sped up the traffic, it's the speed. Coming off of that, I don't see that.
Councilmember Oliver Davis made a motion to defeat Bill No. 19-01. Councilmember Karen
White seconded this motion which was carried by a roll call vote of eight(8) ayes and one(1)nay
(Councilmember Gavin Ferlic).
19-04 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA,
APPROVING A PETITION OF THE AREA
BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS FOR THE
PROPERTY LOCATED AT 1119 LINCOLNWAY
WEST
Councilmember Oliver Davis made a motion to continue Bill No. 19-04 to the March 11th, 2019
meeting of the South Bend Common Council.
