SpU TH 8F
4
,
R R
1865
CITY OF SOUTH BEND
PETE BUTTIGIEG, MAYOR
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 31, 2012
Contact:Debra Johnson,Director of Communications
Phone: 574-235-5853
SOUTH BEND POLICE DEPARTMENT INCREASES WALKING PATROLS
SOUTH BEND Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Police Chief Chuck Hurley enacted a new
community initiative to help build strong relationships between South Bend residents and
police officers. Since the start of summer, residents might have noticed increased police
presence in their neighborhoods. As part of a new police and neighborhood partnership,
some officers now park their squad cars to walk a portion of his or her beat.
"Not only has downtown seen increased police presence because of the new sub-station,
but across the city, we are encouraging officers to get out of their vehicles to walk in the
neighborhoods and talk to people," said Mayor Pete Buttigieg. "These interactions help
with community relations and increase trust and security."
The walking patrol initiative began in April and some day shift officers walk within their
assigned beats. There are approximately 10 to 12 officers conducting walking patrols
daily.
"The goal has been primarily to have more personal interaction between the citizens and
the officers working that assigned beat," said Lieutenant Joseph Galea who oversees the
walking patrol initiative. "We hope there may be a more personal trust seeing that officer,
thus possibly giving further information on crimes or fixture possible intel. This also gives
a more personal touch that we are approachable."
The department also deploys bike patrols where officers ride for approximately one hour
a day between dispatches. Approximately 4 to 6 officers ride bikes daily. Bike patrols
promote health and exercise for officers, along with more personal interaction with
citizens.
For more information visit http://southbendpolice.com/.
###
1400 COUNTY-CITY BUILDING- 227 W.JEFFERSON BOULEVARD-SOUTH BEND,INDIANA 46601
PHONE 574/235-9261 FAx 574/235-9892
