REGULAR MEETING January 28, 2019
think I did anything outside of what is expected of all of us to do. It is called upon us to serve each
other and that is what I think I did. But, thank you for recognizing me.
James Hurt, 51934 Watersedge Court, South Bend, IN, stated, I belong to Greater St. John's
Missionary Baptist Church where Andre A. McGee is my pastor. He was just recently awarded
the Drum Major Award as well as our church. Mark Green, at our church, would be Deacon Mark
Green. I'm chairman of the Board at Greater St. John's Missionary Baptist Church and Deacon
Mark Green is my co-chairman. I can honestly say that not only was he my dentist, as well, but in
addition to that,we ware fraternity brothers. So, over the years,it has been a pleasure to work with
Dr. Green and everything I have called upon of him, he has always responded and has done very
well. So, all I have to say is congratulations and you couldn't ask for a better person to receive this
resolution.
Council President Tim Scott turned the floor to Council Members for questions and comments.
Councilmember Gavin Ferlic stated, Thank you for your service, Dr. Green.
Councilmember John Voorde stated, Thank you.
Councilmember Jake Teshka stated, Thank you for your service. It's almost incomprehensible,
that list of things you've accomplished. Thank you.
Councilmember Jo M. Broden stated, So, I ran around as a little girl on Lincolnway West, too, so
I relate to the story of hanging out at your dad's place of employment. You said, Dr. Green, that
this is kind of what we are all called to do but thirty-seven (37) years in any one (1) profession is
quite an accomplishment. I think of the schedule of a dentist and the number of people you've
impacted just with that. I'm also moved by the thread of all of the different things you've done in
the community. You've really shared yourself, your wisdom, skills and talents, and really have
been a role model. It's great to have this opportunity to lift you and your family up. It's never done
in a vacuum, right? Your family, your church family and the folks you lean on for support, and vis
versa, thank you to them. Thank goodness Councilmember Davis found you all those years ago.
I'm thinking, in terms of your new title, I'm assuming you have a red tie and socks?
Congratulations.
Councilmember Regina Williams-Preston stated,I just want to thank you for,of course, all of your
service. It's certainly a model for what we should be doing. You are absolutely right. It is very
common, what you've done, and yet uncommon in the same vein. You are absolutely a pillar of
this community and you absolutely solidified your legacy in this community, not by just staying
here and not being a snowbird, but you have so much more to give still. Also, your family. Your
daughter and with the work she is doing, you've certainly been a model for her and she is carrying
on that legacy, and that will continue, I'm sure, with those three(3)beautiful granddaughters. So,
thank you, again, and I look forward to your continued work and service in this community.
Councilmember Tim Scott stated, Dr. Green, thank you so much for everything that you've done.
You are a shining example. That is the good thing about this Council. What we've done is you are
going down in the history of the Common Council and this City, and this is all going to be part of
the public record going back to 1865. You are a part of history. You might think it's common but
we like to set examples by showing evidence of someone that does the right thing. We appreciate
you being that asset within our community. I think one (1) of those granddaughters was fussing a
little bit, she definitely has the pipes for City Council. So,when she gets old enough, we'll see her
up here.
This being the time heretofore set for the Public Hearing on the above bill, proponents and
opponents were given an opportunity to be heard. There were none.
Councilmember Gavin Ferlic made a motion to adopt Bill No. 19-13 by acclamation.
Councilmember Jake Teshka seconded this motion which carried unanimously by a voice vote of
eight (8) ayes.
REPORTS OF CITY OFFICES
6
