The storefront or"sub-station"will allow <br /> officers and volunteers to promote safety with businesses and residents and participate in <br /> downtown events. <br /> The opening will take place on Thursday, June 28 at 12:00 p.m. The sub-station is located <br /> at 119 S. Michigan Street. <br /> "The sub-station will be open to all South Bend residents to learn more about crime <br /> prevention and being safe," said Mayor Buttigieg. "Residents and business owners can <br /> also find information about events happening around the city, especially downtown. It <br /> will bring more police presence to the downtown area and promote increased safety <br /> through events,tutorials,partnerships with DTSB, and the sharing of information." <br /> The new sub-station will offer crime prevention and visitors' bureau literature, finger <br /> printing and identification for children,and job recruitment information. The sub-station <br /> will be staffed by volunteers in police services. The sub-station will primarily serve as a <br /> base for officers who will be working throughout downtown. It will be open when major <br /> events occur downtown or when the department is hosting an event on public safety for <br /> business operators,residents, or visitors to South Bend. The office will not be open 24 <br /> hours a day. <br /> "The sub-station will be utilized by officers who are assigned into the downtown area by <br /> foot patrol,bicycles, and T-3s," said Chief Chuck Hurley.
