• Continue acquisition of older, deteriorated multi -story industrial <br />buildings north of Sample Street. <br />' • Acquire older, deteriorated, underutilized manufacturing buildings south <br />of Sample Street particularly the former Studebaker Foundry on Prairie <br />Avenue and the South Bend Foundry between Franklin Street and <br />Lafayette Street. <br />• Protect and enhance the physical environment for the businesses along <br />Michigan, Main, Lafayette and Franklin Streets through limited <br />streetscape improvements, including new sidewalks, curbs, landscaping, <br />lighting and street paving. <br />• Encourage a strong business association such as the South Gateway <br />Improvement Association <br />• Establish and maintain an attractive inner -city light industrial area in <br />the Industrial Fringe Area that will complement the commercial area on <br />Michigan and Main Streets. <br />• Develop an attractive and economically viable entrance to the Central <br />Business District on South Michigan Street. <br />• Improve the physical environment of the sub -area through clean -up of <br />vacant lots, removal of dead trees and brush, and public improvements <br />to streets, curbs, sidewalks and lighting. <br />• Where necessary, improve appearance of existing buildings in the sub- <br />area through building rehabilitation and clean-up of former industrial <br />sites.
