making a donation to the parks, one can have a tree planted to commemorate a special occasion <br />or a loved one who has died. This is a wonderful way to create a living memorial. <br />The decision to drop Summer in the City was difficult. Staffworked hard to provide a <br />family friendly atmosphere with good food and lots to do. Despite accommodations that were <br />roads for nearby business owners, there were still coamplaints. It had also become too costly to <br />provide sufficient security to ensure a safe event. We will continue to look for other ways to <br />bring people together to celebrate the diversity of our community and to maximize use of our <br />wonderfiil parks. On a positive note, I am pleased to announce that the parade will continue. It <br />will become an exciting addition to the Hall of Fame Enshrinement festivities. This partnership <br />should allow the parade to become even better. <br />2004 was a good year for the park <br />system. Over 1,000,000 people attended <br />events and programs that we sponsored from <br />the Daddy-Daughter dance to Kids Triathlon. <br />Our staff is expert at getting people moving. <br />We also generated $3.6 million in user fee <br />revenue and half a million dollars in non- <br />reverting fees. The Park Board completed an <br />update of the five-year master plan. One of <br />the most exciting prospects is the purchase of the Art Iron building to centralize maintenance <br />operations. This will allow fur demolition of the Howard Park facility, opening up new park <br />space in 2005. We are aheady receiving imaginative proposals for use of that space. This city is <br />truly blessed to have so many wonderful parks along our riverfront, including the linear parks <br />created by our 5.4 miles ofriver trail system In 2005 we will begin construction nfthe new <br />Riverside Trail moving north fram Angela toward Pinhoak Park. It will eventually connect with <br />the Darden Bridge at the north end ofthe city. 'This is a great place to live! <br />Public Works <br />Champions know the value of teamwork, each person doing their part. Our Engineering <br />Division provides critical behind the scenes support to many other city departments. It helps <br />neighborhoods by overseeing curb and sidewalk work throughout the city.
