game will help us keep the roads in better shape during our most challenging time for road <br />maintenance. Street Department crews also sweep and plow all 500 miles of roadway. They <br />grade alleys and berms and apply dust control material. Last year we continued the base <br />stabilization program for selected alleys to reduce maintenance and increase durability. <br />Major road rebuilds were completed in <br />2005 vn the newly realigned Bendix as part of <br />the Bosch campus development, at United Drive <br />to allow for expansion of a local business and <br />on Chapin Street in front of this wonderful new <br />museum. On a proud day in December we <br />gathered to officially rename the reconstructed <br />Inner Belt from Lincolnway West to <br />Washington for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., <br />honoring his contributions to our country. This street serves as an entryway to one of the city's <br />oldest and most historic neighbarhoods, and also one of its most diverse. It will bring people to <br />the Center for History and the Studebaker National Museum. In the near future we will construct <br />a new firehouse (Station 2) at the corner of LWW and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. During <br />2006 we will start construction on major rebuilds of South Miami and Portage We will improve <br />Michigan from US20 to Chippewa, adding double left turn lanes at Ireland, and we will widen <br />Ireland to the west of Michigan to accommodate anticipated traffic to the new Erskine Commons <br />shopping center. We have started design work for Ewing. We will design an extension of <br />Napoleon Boulevard as part of the redevelopment partnership in the Northeast Neighborhood to <br />allow for new housing. We're putting your tax dollars to good work all around the city. <br />Hometown Pride <br />Maintaining our streets and utilities is a key function of government. Maintaining <br />neighborhoods requires cooperation and partnership. The Building Department, Code <br />Enforcement and the Department of Community and Economic Development play vital roles in <br />this effort. Our certified building inspectors are tireless in making sure that new construction and <br />additions to buildings are safe and sound. Several members of the Building Department serve on <br />state and national oversight boards. In 2005 staffmade 31,870 inspections, driving over 169,000 <br />A-21 <br />
