O4 SOU T$
4 d
F y
U 7
y;
WMACE y^
1865
Office of the Mayor
NEWS RELEASE
Friday,August 05,2011
12:15 PM
Contact: Mikki Dobski, Director, Communications&Special Projects, 235-5855 or 876-1564, or David
Tungate, Director, South Bend Water Works, 235-5922
Water main flushing continues — crews heading to the
southwest side next week
South Bend Water Works crews have finished work on water main flushing on the northeast and
southeast sides of the city and are now moving to the Southwest side, bounded by Washington
on the north,Kern Road on the South,Mayflower on the west and US 31 on the east,to
continue the 2011 program. The flushing program is designed to systematically move through
the city's distribution system to ensure the best water quality for our customers.
Crews will begin on the northern edge of the area and will then move around the quadrant in
numerical order per the zones on the attached map. The first area to be flushed will be bounded
by: Washington on the north, Walnut on the west, Lafayette on the east, and Western on the
south and crews will then work through the rest of the quadrant.
The "day-time" flushing program, in the Southwest quadrant, will run Mondays through Fridays
beginning on Aug. 8 and is expected to be completed by Sept. 8. Crews will then move on to the
northwest quadrant to complete the citywide program by early October.
NOTE: Once the flushing crews have moved from the immediate area, some customers may
still have discolored water in their service lines. This can be eliminated by using a"3 by 7"
flush: simultaneously opening three cold water taps and letting the water run for 7
minutes.
"A water main flushing program is an important part of the operation and maintenance of a
water distribution system," said David Tungate,Director of South Bend Water Works. "The
water may be temporarily discolored, but it should clear up after we are out of the immediate
area. Our water quality exceeds the standards for local, state and federal safe drinking water
regulations."
