South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -July 20, 2007
7. PROGRESS REPORTS (CONT.)
schematic of what they might do on the St.
Joseph/Jeffersonshe. The schematic was ten stories and
would have about 170 to 200 rooms, with 200-225
parking spaces within the project.
They have been looking at the South Bend market for
awhile; White Lodging has built several hotels in the
South Bend market; they think the downtown is ripe for
another hotel. They can move very quickly to sign an
agreement within a couple of weeks of having the site
and begin construction next spring.
Mr. Peczkowski asked whether the hotel would be a
Marriott product. Mr. Wells responded that likely it
would not do a full service Marriott or Springhill Suites
because that's what the Kite development will have.
They also do Hyatt hotels. They like to work with
existing hotels so that everybody gets better business.
The last thing they want to do is come into South Bend
and lower the rates and occupancy levels.
Mr. Peczkowski confirmed that they are not looking at
the university clients. Mr. Wells indicated they
primarily serve business travelers. The franchises they
work with have strong followings. Experienced
business travelers hunt for their favorite places to stay.
Mr. Downes said it sounds very exciting.
Mayor Luecke said South Bend is very excited to have
this interest. R.E.I. is a substantial firm with great
experience. There has long been discussion about
whether downtown South Bend could have another
hotel. We're delighted to have this contact with a firm
eager to move forward quickly.
8.
