South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -July 20, 2007
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
B. Tax Abatements
() continued...
Mr. Peczkowski: So these numbers we're
seeing are based already on that projected
increase.
Mr. Peczkowski: "Without it they cannot
operate the facility." Again, public money is
keeping someone competitive. Either the
business is run so poorly that it can't find a
way to maintain a competitive edge and it
needs to ask the public to help finance their
business's competitiveness, or, I'm really
sorry, but the city's been gouging businesses
through the years with taxes that are so
onerous that every business needs relief from
a government that's obsessed with keeping
its coffers filled. I don't know which way to
go on this one. I think it's a sad statement on
the abatement process once again.
Mr. Downes: The reality is that it's a net
investment of new capital. It creates new
jobs and retains existing jobs. That's a pretty
good use of public money.
Mr. Peczkowski: It's a use that's being
studied now in Chicago and is being shown
as fallacious.
Mr. Downes made a motion to approved
Resolution No. 2355 approving an
application for personal property tax
deduction for property located at 5855
Carbonmill Dr. in the Airport Economic
Development Area. (GWSB-Corporate
Services, lessee). Ms. Jones seconded the
THE COMMISSION FAILED TO APPROVE
RESOLUTIONNo. 2355.
34
