REGULAR MEETING OCTOBER 23, 2006
Mr. Maciulski stated that she was in attendance, and they listened to the explanation of
the financial situation at length. Following was an open discussion, but no goals were
determined. The next meeting date was set up for October 16, 2006. Information of this
meeting that was supposed to be given to the media, was found only in the public notice
section of the newspaper. Despite the lack of media, the room was filled and there was
standing room only, which was very nice to see that kind of support from the community.
Many good ideas were shared, and suggestions for making things even better, were
plentiful. Lists for committees were generated, and she is waiting to be contacted by the
Parks Department, because she signed up for two of those committees. As of today, she
has not been contacted. While this has been happening, they have had a group of citizens
that have organized themselves, and they are calling themselves the Botanical Society of
South Bend. They have at this point and time accomplished a number of things;
remember this has only been over a month’s time. The Botanical Society has been
meeting regularly, they have a web page, they have business cards, they have a Post
Office Box, they have opened a bank account for deposits, they have enlisted SCORE for
the not-for-profit procedures, they have been in contact and visited other conservatories
that have gone through similar situations, they are working closely with the Historic
Preservation Commission, and are meeting and setting goals. The most pressing goals at
the moment are to secure a pro-bono attorney, to organize executive members and set
committees, and to sponsor a fund raiser, which will be on Sunday, November 5, 2006 at
the Greenhouses from 11:00 – 3:30, and would like to extend an invitation to all the
Councilmember’s. Ms. Maciulski urged the Council to please support the efforts by the
Botanical Society of South Bend and save the greenhouses and conservatories, they are
valuable treasures.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the Council, President Rouse adjourned
the meeting at 9:45 p.m.
ATTEST: ATTEST:
___________________________ __________________________
John Voorde, City Clerk Timothy A. Rouse, President
29
