Luecke today announced that he will appoint Darryl Boykin, uniform division <br /> chief since 2005, as the next Chief of Police for the South Bend Police Department. <br /> Luecke selected Boykins, a member of the force since 1984, because of a combination of <br /> factors, including Boykins': <br /> • Leadership for the past three years of the department's uniform division, the largest <br /> division with more than 150 officers, often considered the No. 2 role within the <br /> department. The uniform division is responsible for several specialty patrols, <br /> including K-9, SWAT and NEST (Neighborhood Enforcement Service Team). <br /> • Experience in the police department beginning as a patrolman and rising through the <br /> ranks. First as a corporal and sergeant of the K-9 unit, then serving as a sergeant and <br /> lieutenant of the 1"detail until in 2000 being named as captain of the 3`d detail, K-9 <br /> unit and northwest region. Before becoming uniform division chief, Boykins served <br /> as captain of the 3`a detail and of the K-9 unit. <br /> • Personal background, including such community honors as Officer of the Year <br /> awards (in 1991 from the Exchange Club of South Bend and 2004 from Grace Baptist <br /> Church of Granger), Executive Journal's Best Cop Award in 2004, the YMCA's <br /> Urban Youth Service Award in 2004, along with Red Ribbon and You Make the <br /> Difference awards in 2007. <br /> • Community outreach, including serving as aboard member of the Near Northwest <br /> Neighborhood Inc. and the Community Tennis Association. <br /> • Educational efforts among young people as demonstrated through his longstanding <br /> leadership of the South Bend Boxing and Education program for teens as well as <br /> teaching inner-city children and adults how to play tennis. <br /> "His concern about young people in our community shows great commitment to South <br /> Bend and to the youth of our community, and really to the big picture of what community <br />
