The Morris Performing Arts Center
Abstract
Results of this study found the total indirect economic
impact of the Morris to be at least $5.9 million, given
an anticipated attendance of 165,000 in 2007. This
^venerates veer e'2C2 nnn in (+also tqv rn`nnl orl,4
r, WJJ ✓,VVV 111 0 VJ tAl1 1 V Y Vl 411 .1
significantly contributes to the economic lifeblood of
local businesses.
Executive Summary
The Morris Performing Arts Center is located in the heart of downtown South Bend, Indiana. It
is home to the Broadway ThPatPr L.eaglP; the So?th Rend Symphony QrchPstra; and the
Southold Dance Theater. The Morris is also the owner of the Palais Royale, South Bend's
premier banquet facility. The Morris is a strategic component in the promotion of tourism and
economic development and the general revival of the downtown South Bend area.
The Morris Performing Arts Center requested Professor Jerome L. McElroy to examine the
feasibility of producing an updated and expanded economic impact study based on the 2004
work by the Graduate Schoyyol of Management, University of Dallas. He then 'di``r/ected my
llLZ V1ident study to detel^11i11e the potential indirect eV011oml^ imp4Vt of the i`i l1r111J Vll 1VV41
businesses. My approach was to survey patrons of the Morris Performing Arts CVenter (PAC),
local businesses, and patrons of the Palais Royale.
Rcsuits of this study found the total indirect economic linpacit of the Morris to be at least $5.9
million, given an anticipated attendance of 165,000 in 2007. This generates over $353,000 in
sales tax revenue and significantly contributes to the economic lifeblood of local businesses.
urvey results showed patrons the Niorris PAC, excluding the cost of awl nission, have a
$5,563,800 million indirect economic impact on the local business community. These findings
are based on an expected attendance of 165,000 guests in 2007 (ticketed and non - ticketed
events — paid and complementary attendance). A breakdown of total spending by category is
included in Figure 1.
The Morris projects $19,000 to be spent by `runners,' (on -hand staffing of performers who run to
pick up necessities, such as food, dry cleaning, office supplies, etc.) in 2007. This is based on an
average 19 runners in 2006 and an average spending of $1000 per runner. The Morris also
provided information on performing groups which utilize overnight accommodations. The
average number of performing groups which utilize hotels is 31. The average number of rooms
used by each show is four, and at a mean cost of $89 /room, this is $11,036 additional spending in
relation to Morris events.
In 2007, the Palais Royale estimates the sale of $290,000.00 in food and beverages obtained
from local venders during the year's events. This amount summed with the $5.6 million
projected spending by Morris patrons, the $19,000 spent by runners, and the estimated $11,036
spent on hotels by performing groups equals a total projected indirect economic impact of
$5,883,836 generating $353,030.16 in sales tax revenue.
