<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Office of the Mayor <br /> <br />MEDIA ADVISORY <br />Friday, November 19, 2010 <br />3:00 PM <br />Contact: <br />Mikki Dobski, Dir. of Communications & Special Projects, 574-235-5855/876-1564c. <br /> <br />Miami Street Update <br /> <br />Miami Street will re-open at the end of the work day on Monday, <br />November 22, 2010. <br /> <br />South Bend, IN <br />: The Miami Street project, that began on May 3 of this year and was <br />scheduled to be completed in 2011, will be finished months ahead of schedule. “We are <br />very pleased with the efforts of our project team including Consulting Engineer for the <br />design, Ken Herceg and Associates, the Contractor, Hoffman Brothers Construction, the <br />Concrete sub-contractor, Rieth-Riley Construction, and Lawson-Fisher Associates, the <br />Construction Engineer responsible for contract administration,” said Littrell. No work <br />days were lost to weather in July, August, September, and October. During that time the <br />Contractor was grading and preparing sub-grade, placing concrete pavement, <br />constructing curbs, and replacing the driveway approaches modified to fit the new road. <br />Littrell noted that, “all these items are rain and high-temperature sensitive and in the <br />typical year we would expect to lose as many as fifteen working days due to weather <br />during those four months.” <br /> <br /> The contractor and subs were on the job during those months, diligently working on the <br />project with the expectation that adverse conditions would force sidewalk and landscape <br />construction to next year. “We ‘lucked out’ with the weather and we appreciate that the <br />contractors were pro-active in taking advantage of these conditions resulting in the early <br />completion of a major road project,” said Littrell. <br /> <br />Project Background: <br /> <br />Total Construction cost: $4.48 million <br /> <br />Funding: The project initially was funded through federal aid for construction at 80% of <br />project cost. Due to the efforts of MACOG, the project was qualified for $1.9 million in <br />American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds, reducing the City's share to 10% or <br />approximately $490,000. <br /> -more- <br />
