REGULAR MEETING February 26, 2018
2018. Councilmember Gavin Ferlic seconded the motion which carried by a voice vote of nine
(9) ayes.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Council President Tim Scott stated, I would like to recognize Randy Kelly for his service to his
City and this Council. We appreciate what he has given to us and we are sorry to see him go. We
are grateful to have Sharon McBride with us. I do want to say, for those that were not there, the
St. Joseph Democratic Party did an excellent job. It was a very transparent process.
NEW BUSINESS
Councilmember Jo M. Broden stated, The Solid Waste Management District is meeting again
tomorrow. Under consideration is an HHW fee of eleven dollars ($11) and a recycling rate of
twenty-eight dollars ($28) for those who are currently in the recycling program. Secondly,
another announcement relative to tomorrow night, I am viewing a film called Little Warriors and
it is at the Eck Visitors Center tomorrow night on the University of Notre Dame's campus at
6:30 p.m. This is to get children to get engaged on the issue of climate change. Dinner is served
and there is no fee. I am looking forward to presenting at that.
Council President Tim Scott announced, Please,by the next Council meeting, schedule your
respective Committee's organization meeting.
PRIVILEDGE OF THE FLOOR
Sue Kesim, 4022 Kennedy Drive, South Bend, IN, stated, I would like to point out that in South
Bend and Mishawaka combined, there are 54,000 seniors. Those are people over fifty. So I
would like, for when you are doing data, you to consider that we have a lot of seniors struggling
and they seem to be overlooked. I helped five (5) seniors with ruined homes this past week. They
didn't have insurance and lost a lot of things. I would also like to see all the buildings that the
City owns and look at those rooftops to see if there could be solar panels. We need to up the
budget to get to more roads and more potholes. I also think the Council needs to focus on real
priorities like the opioid crisis, crime, roads, sewer overflows and not the fluff stuff. Really get
down to work because we have the next circuit breaker coming. As I'm evaluating in the next
budget process, I hope you get tough and make better priorities than you have in the past.
Samuel Brown, 222 E. Navarre Street, South Bend, IN, stated, I have a watchdog group called
Citizens United. I haven't been here for a while. Our kids are not getting served well by our
school system. I miss coming here. I was in the flood area. We got it done and we let them know.
I was like a pit bull on this. I'm blessed that I was able to do this. My neighbors were really
affected. I hope the City takes care of the roads. We need to take care of these potholes.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the Council,President Tim Scott adjourned the
meeting at 8:02 p.m.
10
