INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM
Information Technologies Department
227 W Jefferson Blvd (574) 246-6000
TO: Board of Public Works, Linda Martin
CC: Dan O'Connor
FROM: Michael E. Sniadecki, Director of Infrastructure
SUBJECT: City of South Bend-SOPHOS Cloud Endpoint Protection
DATE: 119118
Linda and Members of the Board,
With the U.S. Federal Government ordering federal agencies to remove Kaspersky Lab products
from governmental computers over concerns the Moscow -based cybersecurity software
company might be vulnerable to Russian government influence, The Office of Innovation and
Technology Dept. is also recommending to follow suit. Please see the attached quote regarding
the replacement of Kaspersky Anti -Virus Endpoint with SOPHOS Cloud Endpoint Protection on
all COSB desktops. The Infrastructure division has been using the server version of Sophos over
the past year and recommends using this product within the desktop environment. Not only will
COSB be following government recommendations, but we will be getting additional Protection,
Alerting and a Centralized console. See the benefits below;
Why it would work well for the city
• U.S. government banned Kaspersky from acceptable AV for all their agencies
• Centralized console for quick endpoint views
• Alerting for the most egregious (or any) problems
• Uses much less endpoint resources then Kaspersky
• Currently what we are using for the servers
+ Whitelisting/B lack] isting of sites, software and file types
• Elemos works with Sophos and not Kaspersky
+ Additional protection from Ransomware
• Additional projection from Malicious Software
• Exploit prevention
• Behavior analysis against known infections
Key Features
• Mobile protection
+ Server protection
• Endpoint protection
• Web management
• Device management
• Detailed reporting
