All Committee
Members were present except one citizen member of the Health and Public Safety Committee.
Chairperson LaFountain asked members of the wage negotiation team to comment on the
Firefighters bill. Councilmember Puzzello and Henry Davis, members of the negotiating team,
both spoke to the communication, cooperation, and consideration shown by both sides of the
table. Ken Marks, President of the Firefighter's Union, similarly spoke of mutual respect and
understanding shown by both parties. The result of negotiations Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand
explained was a one year agreement that froze salaries at 2009 levels; but re-classified ranks
which adds to the pension base in 2010 and 2011. Like other city employees the fireman would
not receive a $500.00 contribution to a flex plan in 2010. All complemented Kathy for her
professionalism. Councilmember Varner motioned the bill go to full Council favorably.
Councilmember Rouse seconded. All acceded.
Chairperson LaFountain then announced no hearing or action would be taken on the Police
compensation bill due to the fact a ratification vote by the members was still in progress. The bill
would be acted upon at a special meeting of the Council to be held on September 20, 2009 at
5:00 p.m.
