3 , <br />ORDINANCE NO.�,, <br />AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 2243, ADOPTED BY THE <br />COMKON COUNCIL MARCH 279 1922 AND SIGNED BY THE MAYOR <br />MARCH 30, 1922, COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE BUILDING CODE OF <br />THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA. <br />BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana that Article XXXII of Ordinance No. 2243 be amended by the <br />additign of the following sections: <br />Section 678a. It shall be unlawful for any person firm or corpora- <br />tion to occupy or continue to occupy any basement or cellar story of <br />any building within the fireproof district of this city, as it now <br />exists or as it may hereafter be defined by ordinance, when such <br />occupancy consists wholly or in part of the storage or display of <br />goods or any materials of a combustible nature, unless such basement <br />or cellar story is equipped with appurtenances for fire extenguish« <br />ment as are herein specified, <br />Section 678b, Equipment to meet the requirements of this ordinance <br />may be approved automatic sprinklers or semi - automatic dry -pipe equip- <br />ment. <br />Oection 6780. Semi- automatic dry pipe equipment may be used in build <br />ings when only the basement or cellar story of the building is requir- <br />ed,to be so equipped. This equipment shall consist of dry -pipe with <br />automatic sprinkler heads of size, type and arrangement required for <br />automatic sprinkler system, Such :dry -pipes shall be: <br />(a) connected to the public water supply or to elevated <br />tank.with not less than two connections and controlled by manually <br />operated valves, Or <br />(b) provided with outside connections for the attachmant of <br />equipment of the South Bend Fire Department, <br />Where the cellar or basement section is used for the storage of <br />flammable liquids or paints, or the floor area exceeds 5000 square <br />feet, and a semi automatic dry -pipe equipment is installed, there shall <br />be provided also a thermostatic fire alarm system which shall, in the <br />event of fire, transmit the alarm to the fire department. <br />Section 678de Manually operated valves connecting with the water supp- <br />ly shall be not less than 4" valves and not more than one such conneo. <br />tion or valve shall be located in the basement or cellar story itself. <br />Either of the valves and connections shall be sufficient to supply the <br />necessary volume and pressure to operate the whole number of sprinkler <br />heads at one time. <br />Section 679ee Where outside connections are provided, they shall meet <br />the requirements for Siamese connections specified elsewhere in this <br />article. <br />Section 679f, Within 60 days after the passage of this ordinance, the <br />owner or owners, or occupant or occupants of each basement or cellar <br />apace, within the district aforesaid, occupied or to be occupied shall <br />file with the chief of the Fire Department of South Bend, duplicate <br />prints of the basement or cellar story equipped or to be equipped with <br />the aforesaid fire protection. Such prints shall be on cloth 12 inches <br />by 18 inches with a 2 inch binding edge at the left -hand 12 inch side, <br />The prints shall show alldetails of the basement or cellar story drawn <br />to scale, the construction of walls, floor and floor above, together <br />with all openings in the same, all means of ingress and egress, all <br />means for receiving or discharging goods, elevators and shafts, parts -� <br />tion walls and openings therein, location and kind of heating plant/ <br />
