White Contact: 229-3100 <br /> City Council Committee of the Whole Chairperson <br /> Volunteers Needed for Advisory Street Re-Naming Committee <br /> On May 11, 2015, the South Bend Common Council unanimously adopted Resolution No. 4443-15, which was <br /> sponsored by Council Members Karen L.White,Henry Davis,Jr., and Oliver J.Davis. It recommended that <br /> a 7-member Advisory Street Re-Naming Committee be established to consider an additional street location to <br /> honor the late Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. The Resolution was approved by Mayor Buttigieg and is now <br /> of record in the Office of the City Clerk. The Council has four (4) appointments, the Mayor has three (3) <br /> appointments, with the Mayor and the Board of Public Works making the final decision on any street <br /> recommended to be re-named. <br /> The City Council has the opportunity to select four(4)residents of the City of South Bend to be a member of this <br /> Advisory Committee. Applications are available on line at the Council's website available at <br /> www.southbendin.gov or in person from the Office of the City Clerk, 4a' Floor County-City Building, in <br /> Downtown South Bend. Applicants must be residents of the City of South Bend and must complete and file a <br /> completed application no later than noon on Monday, July 13'. Interviews of qualifying candidates will take <br /> place beginning soon thereafter by the Committee of the Whole, with appointments being made on July 27,2015. <br /> The Advisory Street Re-Naming Committee has the following duties and responsibilities in overseeing a process <br /> which invites residents and business owners in the City of South Bend to recommend a current street for <br /> consideration to be renamed to honor the late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. by the Board of Public Works,by: <br /> 1. Encouraging public participation for submission of streets to be considered over a thirty(30) day period. <br /> 2. Establishing a 1-page form for all recommendations which would be sent to the Office of the City Clerk. <br /> 3. Tallying up all recommendations in an order of those receiving the most amount of recommendations, <br /> with the originals of all forms being maintained in the Office of the City Clerk. <br /> 4. Forwarding the tally of the public response to the Board of Public Works, the South Bend Common <br /> Council, and the Mayor within ten (10) days after the ending of the thirty(30) day response period. <br /> The public is encouraged to participate in this important community project, so that your voices and opinions are <br /> heard.
