193 <br />MEETING Xune,3,--1935 <br />Regular.meet I ing of.the,Board of Public Safety.was held on Monday, <br />Tune 3rd, 1935 at 8:310 A. M. All members were present. <br />Requisitions 1�bearing numbers 08492 to 08501 inclusive were approved. <br />Also claims from the following suppliers in the amount of $170.86: <br />South Bend Tribune $2036 Mio I higan Ave. Lumber Co. $34.80 <br />R. L. Polk & Co. 45.00 Simon Brothers, Inc. 18.95 <br />Frederick Schafer & Son 5.00 Elkhart Brass Mfg. Co. 2.00 <br />C. L. Millhouse 50.00 Boyer Fire Apparatus'GoOl.. 12.75 <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT— Chief Lane present: <br />Matters pertaining to the Police Department were discussed. The Chief <br />reported that stop signs had been placed at'I'Mishawaka Ave. and 30th Street <br />in accordance with former instructions from the Board. Mr. Whitmer was <br />called in to discuss the convention he attended with Officers Vandusen and <br />Burns. Mr. Whitmer was called to prepare a list of suggestions that might <br />appeal to him as improvement in the conduct of the Police Department and <br />have such suggestions ready for presentation to the.Board at the next meeting. <br />The Secretary reported the result of his investigation of the cost of <br />compensation insurance on various departments and found that to cover the <br />Police Department, Fire Department, Street Department, Sewer Department, <br />Cemetery Department, Electrical Department, Dog Pound and Office on the <br />basis of an annual pay roll of $547 --,450.00 that the cost of insurance would- <br />amount to 49,790.00. The Board took no definite action. <br />It was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the headquarters, <br />ffice, furniture and equipment of the Board of Public Safety be trans- <br />erred into the office of the Board of Public Works. This change to.be made <br />s soon as practical. <br />It was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the Secretary be <br />nstruoted to notify the Chief of Police that whenever a truck or other <br />ehicle does damage to the city's lighting or traffic equipment that the <br />ruck doing said damage be immediately impounded until the amount of loss is <br />stablished and an acknowledgment of the indebtedness to the city be had from <br />he owner of the truck or other vehicle. <br />. Continuation certificate on the surety bond of Edmund F. Vitou in the <br />land Casualty Company was approved. <br />Official bond of Leo Williams in the United States Fidelity and Guaranty <br />ompany was approved. <br />Special officer's commission was approved in favor of Edward D. Prange, <br />mployee at the Bendix Products Corporation. Application to the police force. <br />f Edith Cagley for position as police, woman was ordered placed, on file. . <br />- Chief Freeh present. <br />The matter of purchase of a pumper for the Fire Department was fully <br />iscussed and, Mayor Freyermuth being present, after a full discussion it was <br />ecided that the Mayor, Fire Chief, Mr. Anderson and Mr. James of the Common <br />ounoil and a mechanic from the Bendix Products Corporation, whose services <br />ere offered by Mr. Sharlook of the Bendix Products Corporation, would make <br />trip to Chicago and Kenosha on Wednesday to examine fire equipment in those <br />laces. <br />Mr. Harry Lewis and three others representing various labor unions <br />eared before the Board regarding the purchase of fire truck and urged the <br />rd to place the order for the pumper with the American LaFrance Company <br />ause they claim this company is one hundred percent Union labor. The <br />rd took their proposition underadvisement. <br />�LECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. Qualls present: <br />Mr. Qualls reported that the traffic signal at Olive Street and Western <br />ve. was again broken down by the truck owned by the Great Lakes Forwarding <br />ompany, which is the same company that broke down this signal February 25, <br />935. After conferring with Mr. Hunter, it was determined to hold this truck <br />ntil settlement was made for both accidents and an agreement on the part of <br />he 'company was secured when the truck was released. Mr. Qualls reported that <br />new control would have to be purchased to put this signal in operation and <br />hat in previous years he had purchased controls and other accessories from <br />
