REGULAR MEETING - <br />? Regular meeting`of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,.February <br />18, 1935 at 9:00 A. M. All members were present. <br />E <br />Minutes of meeting of February 11, 1935 approved as read. <br />Requisitions bearing the following numbers were approved: 08241 to <br />08250 and 08326 to 08329. <br />Also claims in the amount of $199.35 from the following: <br />indiana Bell.Telephone Co. $ 4.70 Hibberd Printing Co. 8:25 <br />Scherman- Schaus- Freeman do. 1,45 C.E.Knapp SSed & Feed Store 5.50 <br />Scherman- Schaus - Freeman Co. 2.65 Lontz Bros. 66.89 <br />Scherman Schaus- Freeman Co. ,26 Lontz Bros. 62.50 <br />Scherman- Schaus - Freeman Co. .55 Gibson Co. 36.00 <br />F Scherman- Schaus - Freeman Co 2.00 C. H. DeFrees, Inc. 7.99 <br />Holcross & Nye Co. .61 <br />Irving A. Hurwich, attorney,.appeared before the Board in the interests <br />of his client, the Indiana Cab Co. and presented a petition for a'two <br />car cab stand at the northeast corner of Jefferson and Michigan Sts. to <br />be along the north curb of Jefferson St., substantiated by consent of <br />the owner of the building, the tenant of the location immediately <br />affected and the Chief of Police. Approval of this permit was granted <br />by the Board. In granting this permit, the Indiana Cab Co. relinquishes <br />their present stand on the north east corner of Michigan & LaSalle. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT -Chief Freeh present: <br />Application of Louis Szabo for the Fire Dapertment was approved and <br />ordered placed on file. <br />Matters pertaining to the department were discussed and the Chief was <br />given permission to purchase two tires and tubes that are badly needed <br />on one of the fire trucks. <br />The Chief explained the condition of the fire hose equipment and that <br />he should have at this time another 1000 feet. The Board instructed <br />the Secretary to secure bids. <br />ELECTRICi.L DEPARTMENT -Wm. Qualls present: <br />The question of battery replacement for the Fire alarm system was <br />' discussed and Mr. Qualls was authorized to purchase plates from the <br />Gould Storage Battery Co. upon their competitive bid of $769.23. <br />The signal traffic light at Lincoln Way West and William St, was dis- <br />cussed and Mr. Qualls was instructed to investigate the cost of <br />changing to corner post signals and report to the Board at its next <br />meeting. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT -Chief Lane present: <br />Mr. Otto Entzian of the South Bend Cab Co. was called in response to <br />his letter of February 15, 1935 in which he requested the privilege of <br />a two cabstand at the corner of Michigan & Jefferson Sts. on the west <br />side of Michigan St., northeast corner. The matter was referred to the <br />Chief of Police for investigation. <br />The question of towing wrecked cars was brought up by the Chief and <br />discussed. The Chief reported that a meeting of garage owners had been <br />called by him and they decided to take wrecked cars to the dealer of <br />that particular car and that the Gill -Vorn Co. is to do the towing. <br />The Chief was instructed to take orphan cars to the Redmer Garage at <br />110 E. Dubail St. <br />The Chief recommended that officer Wm. Ortman be suspended pending <br />investigation of reported misconduct and charges or resignation, to <br />take effect as of 4 o'clock P.M. February 18 giving him two days* pay <br />after February 15. The Board concurred and the Secretary was instru- <br />cted to officially notify Officer Ortman. <br />The strike situation at the Oliver Farm Equipment Co. was dis cussed <br />and the Chief informed the Board of developments. At this point <br />Mayor Freyermuth appeared.to discuss with the Board a statement he was <br />_preparing for publication suggesting a solution of the strike problems <br />and arrive at a method of <br />by way of appointing committees to discuss <br />settlement. The Board heartily concurred in the suggestion of the <br />Mayor.. <br />
