p4 SOUTH eO 6 <br />r <br />U � <br />RESOLUTION NO. 4624 -17 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br />PUBLICLY CONGRATULATING THE SAINT JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL <br />GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM FOR <br />WINNING THE IHSAA 3A GIRLS BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP <br />6), the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is a voluntary, not - for - profit organization <br />that regulates, supervises and administers interschool athletic activities among its member high schools as an <br />integral part of the secondary education program. Athletics play a significant part in student life at Saint Joseph <br />High School. Whether as a participant or spectator, each student experiences a sense of pride, excitement, and <br />accomplishment. For a Saint Joseph High School student - athlete, the priorities are faith, academics, and athletics. <br />Success in athletics is due to the development of all three components, with an emphasis on utilizing the gifts and <br />talents which God has given each student - athlete and coach; and <br />6AI, on Saturday, February 25, 2017, the Saint Joseph High School Indians beat the North Harrison <br />Lady Cats 57 -49 to capture the 3A Girls Basketball State Championship in Indianapolis. The Indians are the 2017 <br />Northern Indiana Conference (NIC) Sectional, Regional, and Semi -State Champions and defeated four schools <br />ranked in the top ten to reach the state championship. The Girls Varsity Basketball Team completed the regular <br />season play 19 -2 and post season play 7 -0 with a total record of 26 -2; and <br />6ACmai, this victory makes Coach Smallbone, the first female in IHSAA history to win a state <br />championship as both a player and a head coach. Coach Smallbone, along with her assistant coaches Melissa <br />Lechlitner and Kristen Dockery, led the Indians to the state championship in 2005 as players. These three, along <br />with assistant coach Tim Walsh are all Saint Joseph High School alumni. This is their first year as coaches at their <br />alma mater; and <br />6A61W, on behalf of our entire community, the South Bend Common Council is honored to recognize the <br />hard work and dedication of the coaches, manager, athletic director and school principal, namely, Head Coach <br />Sydney Smallbone; Assistant Coach Melissa Lechlitner; Assistant Coach Kristen Dockery; Assistant Coach and <br />JV Head Coach Tim Walsh; Manager Ruth Fackson; Athletic Director Debbie Brown; and School Principal Susan <br />Richter.
