ORDINANCE NO. ~(~.~ ~ "~
AN ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH
BEND, INDIANA, AMENDING CERTAIN MONETARY FRINGE BENEFITS
FOR FIREFIGHTERS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND DURING THE
CALENDAR YEARS OF 1998, 1999 AND 2000.
In 1996, the South Bend Common Council passed certain ordinances fixing the
annual pay and monetary fringe benefits of Firefighters of the South Bend Fire Department
for the calendar years 1997 through 2000.
At the time of passage of the Fire Department's salary ordinances of 1996, the
South Bend Fire Department was in the process of establishing a Safety Officer program,
and it was agreed by the City Negotiating Team and the Wage Committee of the South
Bend Firefighters Association, Local No. 362, that the final determination of the
appropriate amount of specialty pay for the Safety Officers could not be adequately
determined until it was more clearly known what duties, responsibilities and training
requirements of the safety officers were. The South Bend Fire Department wishes to now
establish specialty pay for Safety Officers.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, as follows:
Section I. Safety Officers S en cialty Pay.
Paragraph (f) shall be added to Section III of Ordinance No. 8696-96, which
paragraph shall read as follows:
(f) Safety Officers. The regularly assigned Safety Officer shall receive, in addition
to his or her base salary, the following amount:
1998 1999 2000
$3000 ,3,000 X3,000
Section II. Effective Date. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after
its passage by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor.

Dear Mr. Kelly:
Please find attached an ordinance recommending an Amendment to the Fire Department Salary
Ordinance for the year of 1998, 1999 and 2000. This ordinance will establish speciality pay for
our three (3) Safety Officers. This program is now in place and has proven to be an excellent
safety factor for the Fire Department.
This pay has been discussed and endorsed by Loca1362 Wage Team.
If you have any questions, I will be available to answer them.
Sincerely,
t7~
