In 2004, the city staff identified a need to improve infrastructure and traffic circulation within
the Airport Industrial Park, Phase 1 and 2 parks southeast of the airport. As part of the
work, the city identified a need to upgrade and extend Voorde Drive from Sheridan Drive
west to the airport drive network, improve and upgrade the intersection at Voorde and
Bendix to better accommodate truck traffic and to make improvements on Sherdian and
Commerce Drive.
As a result of the reinvestment into the park, many businesses have moved in to the park or
expanded their operations like Hoosier Tank, Fortis Plastics, Enzyme Research, Danch
Harner & Associates, and Stanz Foodservice. The extension of Voorde Drive into the
airport has also been beneficial as it provides an access point from the east to gain access
into the airport.
As part of the work being completed this spring at the intersection of Bendix and Voorde,
staff has explored and requested a proposal of the contractor doing the project at the
intersection to provide a proposal for resurfacing of the entire surface of Voorde Drive from
the intersection of Sheridan to the project limits of the Bendix project. There is currently a
2200 LF section that was not going to be paved, but the purpose of this request is to ask
Commission approval to increase the project budget by $90,000.00 to pave this section of
roadway. By paving the roadway now, it will have a lifespan equal to that of the intersection
at Bendix that is waiting for a final coat of surface. This section of roadway has seen
increased traffic and the current condition of the roadway requires a resurfacing in the near
future.
Staff requests your approval of the addition of $90,000 to the current project budget of
$222,000 to properly address the infrastructure needs of this revitalizing and growing older
industrial park area.
