Final Week for South Bend’s Spring Releaf Program
South Bend: The city of South Bend expects a record year for the 2009 Spring Releaf loose
leaf pickup program. According to Sam Hensley, Director of Streets, “we anticipate our leaf
vacuum program will collect a total of 6,000 cubic yards of loose leaves this year. Normally, the
spring loose leaf pickup totals approximately 3-4,000 cubic yards.
Next week will be the last week for loose leaf pickup as Street crews begin preparing for the
summer construction season. Residents are reminded that this is a “call-in only” program and they
should call the Bureau of Streets at 235-9244 to request a pickup. The last day for calls will be
Wednesday, April 8. Pickup will take approximately 24 hours. There will be no leaf pickup on
April 10, Good Friday. After Spring Releaf ends, residents can bag their leaves for pickup by the
Division of Environmental Services.
Please follow these guidelines for loose-leaf pickup:
Rake leaves to the curbline, do not rake leaves into the street.

Do not allow children to play in leaf piles near the curb.

Do not add sticks or trash to leaf piles. Crews are unable to collect these piles with
?
vacuum trucks. It will be the owner’s responsibility to dispose of contaminated piles.
Do not contaminate any leaf piles with animal waste.
?
Avoid parking in front of leaf piles to allow access for pick-up.
?
There will be no loose leaf pick-up in alleys.

NOTE:
Residents are reminded that in order to protect our air quality, burning of leaves is
completely prohibited in the City of South Bend and is a violation of City ordinance.

Bagged leaves and bagged or bundled yard waste pickup is also available on a call-in basis,
until Thursday, April 30 through the Division of Environmental Services. Please place bagged or
bundled yard waste at the curb, and call the Bureau of Solid Waste at 277-8823 for pickup.
The regular, automatic (no call-in necessary) Yard Waste Program will begin on Monday,
May 4. Residents are again reminded that all yard waste - leaves, branches, etc. should not contain
any animal waste. Animal waste will contaminate the recycling of leaves and yard waste for
production of organic mulch.
Please follow these guidelines for the Yard Waste Program:
Place yard waste at curbside in bags or containers, by 6:00 a.m. on your regular trash

pickup day, and separate it from trash and debris
until May 4.
Yard waste and brush must be bagged or bundled (no more than 4 feet in length or

1 foot above edge of container).
Please use suitable containers (30 gallon trash container or smaller) - do not place
?
yard waste in City automated trash containers or the Borden recycling
containers.
Do not place yard waste in the alley.

South Bend’s yard waste is recycled at the City’s Organic Resources Facility, diverting this
material from our community’s landfill and providing quality mulch for reuse. City residents can
reap the rewards of their efforts by going to Organic Resources to pick up high quality mulch and
compost for free if you self-load, or at a minimal sliding scale fee if you request assistance with
loading. Organic Resources is located at 4340 Trade Drive, off of Nimtz Parkway just ¼ mile west
of Bendix Drive. Organic Resources is open 8:00 AM to 3:45 PM, Monday through Friday. Please
