Public responds quickly to ‘Priority Outcomes’ survey

In a week since an online survey of the City of South Bend’s 2010 budget priorities
became available, more than 400 people have voiced their opinions on the City’s web
site: www.SouthBendIN.gov
Mayor Stephen J. Luecke announced today that a Spanish language version of the survey
is also available on the site. Public responses will continue to be received through
Monday, April 13.
“The deadline for surveys is approaching. We want to hear the Priority Outcomes
identified by our residents to help shape how the City spends their tax dollars,” Luecke
said. “We’re working to build a community consensus regarding our priorities. I
encourage our residents to make sure their voices are heard in this process.”
City officials will share the results of the scientific telephone survey and the online
feedback during two Town Hall meetings planned for mid-May at Indiana University
South Bend and Washington High School. Details regarding the Town Hall meetings will
be announced as they are confirmed.
The surveys are one aspect of a multifaceted Priority Outcomes initiative announced
March 25 by Luecke. The City of South Bend is working to reduce its 2010 budget by 27
percent because it will face revenue shortfalls exceeding $18 million resulting from state-
mandated property tax caps. As part of that process, the Mayor on March 25 announced
three parallel efforts to help City leadership respond to the unprecedented revenue loss
and the impact on City services.
