A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCII. OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, PUBLICLY
HONORING GREEN INTERMEDIATE CENTER 8TH GRADE HONOR ROLL STUDENT
PAOLA SARMIENTO FOR WINNING THE 34th ANNUAL SOUTH BEND COMMUNITY SCHOOL
CORPORATION'S SPELLING BEE IN 2007
G~1~eaa, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that the National
Spelling Bee was initially established in 1925 as a consolidation of numerous local spelling bees, with E.W.
Scripps Company having the rights to the highly-competitive spelling competition; and
~l~eaa, this year, the 80th Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held in the ballroom of the Grand
Hyatt Washington Hotel in Washington, D.C. and will spotlight winners of sponsored regional spelling bees
held throughout the United States; and
G~~ii~aa, the City of South Bend, Indiana, has a proud history of National Spelling Bee Champions
with Betty Robinson of South Bend winning the contest in 1928 when she correctly spelled the final word,
albumen; and in 2004 when David Scott Pilarski Tidmarsh of South Bend won the contest when he correctly
spelled the final word, autochthonous; and
~~eaa, the South Bend Common Council sees another champion in the making in Paola Sarmiento,
the 1St Hispanic winner of the South Bend Community School Corporation's 34tt' Annual Spelling Bee, when
she correctly spelled extemporaneous in the 13a' round, as she competed in the school corporation's
intermediate centers competition which sent four (4) spellers from each school to the competition.

follows:
Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council
publicly commends and honors PAOLA SARMIENTO, an 8~' grade Honor Roll student at Green Intermediate
Center for winning South Bend Community School Corporation's annual spelling bee competition on February
15, 2007.
Section II The Common Council notes that PAOLA SARMIENTO moved to South Bend from
Mexico in March of 2002, knowing no English at that time and then began learning English for the next several
years and excelled in the school corporation's English Language Learner Program.
Section III. The South Bend Common Council would also like to commend Greene Intermediate
Center's Principal Thomas Fujimura; Assistant Principal Joseph Somers; Bilingual Coordinator Dora Balderas;
and Jo Lake, Paola's Spelling Coach, for their dedication, service and leadership of the 481 Greene students.
Section IV. The Common Council wishes PAOLA SARMIENTO continued success as she moves on
to compete in the regional spelling bee; and wishes her the very best in her studies at Riley High School this fall
as she continues to be a role model as she pursues her career goal of becoming a professional engineer.
Section V. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption by the Council
