HomeMy WebLinkAbout11.06.15_City_To_Host_US_Capitol_TreeCITY OF SOUTH BEND PETE BUTTIGIEG, MAYOR Office of the Mayor CONTACT: Kara Kelly, (574) 235 -5853 kkelly @southbendin.gov FOR RELEASE: Friday, November 6, 2015 MAYOR TO HOST U.S. CAPITOL TREE VISIT TO SOUTH BEND The U.S. Capitol holiday tree, known as the People's Tree, will stop in downtown South Bend at the corner of Michigan and Washington Streets on Sunday, November 15 from 1 -3 pm as it makes its journey from Alaska's Chugach National Forest to Washington D.C. The tree was cut on October 27 near Seward, Alaska and prepared for the 4,000 -mile expedition by land and sea. It's the first time a tree from Alaska has had the honor, and the first time the U.S. Capitol Tree will visit South Bend. Since 1970, a different national forest has been selected to provide the tree each year. Followed by a caravan of caretakers, the tree will stop in 15 cities en route to the U.S. Capitol. The journey will culminate with the official tree lighting in early December.
