SOUTH BEND FIRE AWARDED GRANT TO RECEIVE SPECIALIZED ELDER CARE TRAINING
South Bend Fire Department and the Northern Indiana American Red Cross have partnered to
form one of 30 regional teams selected nationally to receive specialized fire and fall prevention
training sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association.
The training, which takes place November 4 -6 in Orlando, Florida, is for teams in which at least
one firefighter partners with individuals from a local agency that serves older adults. Captain
Gerard Ellis of South Bend Fire has partnered with Tiffaney Chin and Kurt White from Northern
Indiana American Red Cross to form a South Bend -area team.
Following the training, Ellis, Chin, and White will conduct group presentations to prepare
additional facilitators in South Bend and Indianapolis to help older adults live safely in their
homes for as long as possible.
"Data shows that fires and falls are serious problems for older community members," Ellis says.
"The training will provide us with the educational tools we need to reduce risks and improve the
quality of life for residents."
