SOUTH BEND FIRE TO HOST BEAM FROM WORLD TRADE CENTER EN ROUTE TO COLORADO
A 5 -foot long, 3,000 -pound piece of U.S. history will stop in South Bend on Thursday, October
22 as it makes it way from New York City to Fort Collins, Colorado.
Four Poudre Fire Authority firefighters involved in September 11, 2001 rescue efforts are
accompanying the beam across the country this week after participating in sendoff ceremony
Wednesday with representatives from New York City -area emergency crews. The beam is one of
the last remaining pieces of the World Trade Center.
On Thursday afternoon, representatives from the South Bend Fire Department will join Indiana
State Police at the Ohio /Indiana State Line to accompany the beam to South Bend. The four
firefighters accompanying the beam will stay overnight at Central Fire.
South Bend Fire invites the public to view the beam and meet the Poudre Fire Authority
firefighters on Thursday from 6 to 7 pm at Central Fire, 1222 South Michigan Street.
The piece of steel will reside at one of Poudre Fire Authority's fire stations to honor the nearly
3,000 lives lost on 9/11, including 343 New York City firefighters.
