Sam Hensley, Division of Streets, 574-235-9244 Live Christmas tree pickup program extended South Bend, IN: To date, the city has collected a very small number of discarded Christmas trees, approximately 600-700, which is approximately 25% of previous years,” stated Sam Hensley, Director of the Division of Streets. “We are not seeing as many as usual and assume that they have either been buried in the snow piles or have not yet been put out, due to the snow and cold weather.” The city will extend the pickup program for an additional two weeks to help facilitate recycling of these trees. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the extended pickup program and are reminded to dig out any trees that have become buried so that crews do not miss them. Weather permitting, crews will make two additional rounds of all four quadrants within the city limits. Residents also have the option of dropping off their trees at designated city parks. Christmas Tree Recycling 1.Take natural trees to one of three designated City parks – RumVillage, Pinhook, and Veteran’s Memorial Park 2.Place tree at curbside for automatic pickup. The City will continue making rounds and residents may also call the Division of Streets at 235-9244 to help facilitate collection. Trees should be placed at the curbline. Please do not leave trees in the street or in alleys. 3.Please remove all lights, ornaments, and metal including tree stands and nails. Artificial trees or trees containing glass or metal will not be collected. All natural trees are recycled at South Bend’s Organic Resources facility. - 30 -
