This is the 12th year that the South Bend Fire Department has partnered with Helping Hands for Freedom and the Wounded Warrior Project to bring injured veterans and their caregivers to South Bend to attend a Notre Dame football game. Twenty veterans will attend this year, with half sleeping overnight at South Bend Fire's Central Station. Helping Hands for Freedom focuses on veterans affected by military injuries. The organization provides programs for those injured in action and their families. Helping Hands for Freedom and the Wounded Warrior Project paid for game tickets for all the veterans and caregivers attending Saturday's Notre Dame vs. Navy game. South Bend Fire is holding a cookout for the group Friday night at the home of retired New York Fire Lieutenant Patrick "Paddy" Concannon on Coquillard Street. On Saturday, South Bend Fire will host a breakfast at Central Fire and a pre -game tailgate party on Twyckenham Drive between South Bend Avenue and Edison Road.
