PUBLIC INVITED TO SOUTH BEND FIRE OPEN HOUSE TO MARK FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
The South Bend Fire Department invites the public to an event at the Luther J. Taylor Sr. Fire
Training Center, 710 E. Sample St., on Sunday, October 4 from 12 -3pm to mark Fire Prevention
Week, October 4 -10.
Tours of the training center will be offered, as well as fire extinguishing demonstrations. The
theme of Fire Prevention Week 2015 is "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom
Needs a Working Smoke Alarm."
The National Fire Protection Association says the majority of Americans do not know that a
smoke alarm should be installed in each bedroom of the home. According to NFPA statistics,
half of home fire deaths occur at night when people are sleeping. A working smoke alarm cuts
the risk of dying in a fire in half.
"We also remind residents that the majority of home fires start in the kitchen," says Fire Chief
Steve Cox. "Some tips to prevent fires are to stay in the kitchen when cooking, and to always use
a timer. Unattended cooking is the number one cause of house fires."
The Fire Department is working with the American Red Cross to install smoke alarms. To be
eligible, one must be a South Bend resident, sign a release, and schedule an instillation time at
Sunday's event.
Lowes has donated a limited number of carbon monoxide alarms to be given away as well. The
Wishing Tree Foundation will also be on hand to provide information on the dangers of carbon
monoxide poisoning.
