Presented by me to the Mayor of the City of South Bend, Indiana May 12, 19 87 City Clerk Approved and signed by me Waif /2— 19 g7 RESOLUTION NO. 1498-87 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, COMMENDING REVEREND THEODORE M. HESBURGH, C.S .C. AND REVEREND EDMUND P. JOYCE, C.S .C. FOR THEIR THIRTY—FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE AND DEDICATION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME AND TO OUR COMMUNITY WHEREAS , the Common Council of the City of South Bend , Indiana notes with pride the thirty—five (35) years of service and dedication given to the University of Notre Dame by Father Hesburgh and Father Joyce; and WHEREAS, the Common Council acknowledges that because of their leadership , the surrounding community has been touched and enhanced immeasurably; and WHEREAS, the path to educational excellence and high moral values at institutions of higher learning is best typified by the University of Notre Dame; and WHEREAS, the Common Council believes that "Father Ted" and "Father Ned" are living examples of individuals dedicating their lives to the "growing consciousness of human dignity, human rights and human development; " WHEREAS, through and by the examples of these two (2) most dedicated priests of the Congregation of Holy Cross, we urge all of our citizens to rededicate their lives to "thrust for justice" and to work toward "peace on earth" on "Spaceship Earth. " NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, as follows: SECTION I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council hereby publicly commends and thanks REVEREND THEODORE M. HESBURGH, C.S.C. , President of the University of Notre Dame , and REVEREND EDMUND P. JOYCE, C.S.C. , Executive Vice—President , for their thirty—five (35) years of service and dedication to the University and to the surrounding community. SECTION II. The Common Council wishes "Father Ted" and "Father Ned" futures filled with challenges , satisfaction and continued achievements as they embark upon new endeavors . SECTION III.
