PANEL DISCUSSION South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and St. Joseph County Health Department Director of Health Education Robin Vida will join First Lady Michelle Obama and representatives from the National League of Cities at a White House event at 1 pm today, Wednesday, September 16, to honor the achievements made by South Bend and other communities across the nation participating in the Let's Move! Cities, Towns, and Counties initiative. Mayor Buttigieg will also participate in a panel moderated by National League of Cities Executive Director Clarence Anthony, who served as mayor of South Bay, Florida for 24 years. South Bend is the first city in Indiana to achieve gold medals in all five Let's Move! categories. Launched by the First Lady, Let's Move! is designed to help early child -care and education providers incorporate best practices for nutrition, physical activity, and screen time into their programs. At today's event, the First Lady will recognize the 52 communities, including South Bend, that have achieved gold medals in each of the five goal areas, which include providing healthy school meals, opportunities for physical activity during and outside of school, and healthier early care and education programs. "South Bend is honored to be among a select group communities honored for this achievement inspired by the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative," Mayor Buttigieg says. "In conjunction with partners like the St. Joseph County Health Department, the City of South Bend Department of Parks and Recreation, and the South Bend Community School Corporation, we've prioritized the health and well -being of South Bend children, and have made our city a healthier place."
