KIERAN FAHEY NAMED DIRECTOR OF COMBINED SEWERS LONG TERM CONTROL PLAN
Public Works Director Eric Horvath has named Kieran Fahey director of the City of South
Bend's Combined Sewers Long Term Control Plan (LTCP).
Fahey previously served for nearly a decade as an environmental enforcement inspector for the
Environmental Protection Agency of Ireland. Prior to that, he worked with the Irish
Government's Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine as a scientific research officer,
as well as an environmental compliance specialist with a local county council in Dublin. Fahey
has also served as a consultant on a range of environmental engineering assignments throughout
the European Union.
Fahey has a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural and Environmental Science from University
College Dublin, a Master's in Environmental Science, and a Postgraduate Diploma in
Environmental Engineering from Trinity College Dublin. He is a Chartered Engineer with
Engineers Ireland.
The City is currently reassessing its federally- mandated LTCP, which is designed to reduce
sewer overflows into local waterways. In line with the Clean Water Act, the plan is mandated by
the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Justice. Roughly 800 communities
across the country face similar state or federal mandates. South Bend's plan emphasizes
technical innovations that save taxpayer money and protect the environment through increased
efficiency.
