A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, IN SUPPORT OF THE PROPOSAL TO
MOVE THE AMTRAK TERMINAL TO THE FORMER UNION STATION
WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of South Bend,
Indiana, enthusiastically supports the proposal to relocate
the Amtrak Terminal; and
WHEREAS, the Common Council requests the National
Railroad Passenger Corporation which operates Amtrak to
approve the relocation from 2702 West Washington Avenue; and
WHEREAS, the proposed new site being the former Union
Station at 326 West South Street is ideally located to be an
Amtrak Terminal; and
WHEREAS, the proposed site would be adjacent to the
newly constructed Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium which
is the home of the South Bend White Sox, a professional
baseball team in the Midwest League; and
WHEREAS, relocating to downtown South Bend would
further enhance our City's vitality and pride and would
represent another positive step of economic revitalization
and growth.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of
the City of South Bend, Indiana, as follows:
SECTION I. The Common Council of the City of South
Bend, Indiana, strongly encourages the National Railroad
Passenger Corporation to approve the relocation of the
Amtrak Terminal to the former Union Station located at 326
West South Street.
SECTION II. The Council believes that such a
relocation to downtown South Bend would further enhance the
economic revitalization projects currently taking place in
the downtown area, and would be a positive move for all
passengers utilizing the Amtrak service.
SECTION III. The Council authorizes the Office of the
City Clerk to send a certified copy of this Resolution to
the officials of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation
so that it can be a part of the material they review during
their deliberations.
SECTION IV. This Resolution shall be in full force and
effect from and after its approval by the Mayor and adoption
by the Common Council.
