September - October 2015 NewsletterSOUTH September - October 2015 Dear Neighbor, T$8. , , BEND 1865 As the weather turns cooler, the South Bend Fire Department wants to remind residents that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are the best ways to keep family members safe. In addition to changing batteries on the alarms each fall and spring, as we change our clocks, it's also a good time to check the age of your alarms. Alarms more than 10 years old should be replaced. It's also a great time of year for residents to become mentors. The Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Joseph County (bbbs - sjc.org or 232 -9958) and the South Bend Education Foundation's Mentoring Matters Program (edfo.org /mentoring or 283 -8072) deserve our community's support for the great work they do to help young people. Information about both programs can also be found at MentorSouthBend.com. The fall marks budget season in South Bend. As we build a healthier and safer city, we are committed to the successful Group Violence Intervention strategy, the Vacant and Abandoned Houses initiative that has helped strengthen neighborhoods around the city, and the improved safety and vibrancy of the west side's main streets as we invest in the Smart Streets initiative. The City is also committed to continuing South Bend's economic growth, ensuring everyone shares in the progress on jobs, safety, and quality of life. Innovative practices and technological efficiency now delivers better services more cost - effectively, helping to manage costs and sustain long -term fiscal stability. South Bend's 150th birthday celebrations have not only honored the past, but shone a spotlight on our come- back. With pride in our shared heritage, we look forward to an even more promising future. Sincerely, Pete Buttigieg Mayor BEND 5 se,- South Bend Civic Theatre sbct.org Box Office: 574 - 234 -1112 403 N.
