CHRONIC HOMELESS SITUATION

(South Bend, IN) Councilman Henry Davis, Jr. is attempting to bring some tangible
goals and results to the chronic homeless situation in South Bend. Although national
statistics would show that homelessness is going down, South Bend is still in need of a
policy change that will allow many of the homeless a chance at adequate shelter and
not be criminalized for their undesirable station in life
"Homelessness in South Bend has turned into an industry. We need a clearer path in
changing the plight of our most vulnerable," says Davis.
The City of South Bend participates in a consortium with county departments to
measure and supply organizations who help the homeless with finding adequate shelter
however most of it is temporary. There are programs to help veterans, families, youth
and also children in South Bend but the resources are limited.
"South Bend suffers from a vacant and abandoned housing problem and it doesn't
make sense to have vacant homes and homeless people." stated Councilman Davis.
Bill 14 -15 will be discussed today, April 13, 2015 at the South Bend Common Council
meeting during Health and Public Safety committee hearing and at 7pm for the full
council hearing.
