SOUTH BEND POLICE ENFORCING SPEED LIMIT IN SCHOOL ZONES
As the school year begins, South Bend Police ask drivers to take extra precautions in designated
school zones.
On Tuesday, August 18, from 7:30 to 8:30 am, South Bend Police will conduct an intensive
enforcement in the area of 3400 South Michigan and Main Streets, near Xavier School of
Excellence.
In School zones the speed limit is 25 miles per hour. Speeding or using a cellphone in a school
zone can result in fines up to $150.
"We'll have police at various school zones working to get drivers to slow down," says Captain
Terry Young, commander of the South Region Patrol Division. "South Bend has roughly 30
school traffic zones, and drivers need to be cognizant and aware of children."
Crossing guards are also back on duty to help students cross streets safely.
All 50 states have a law making it illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload
children. Traffic in both directions are required to stop when students are entering or exiting a
school bus.
