Presented by me to the Mayor of the City of South Bend, March 14, 89 9 4�--.-.-e.. /�— a�� City Clerk Approved and signed by me _ ,u� /-� 196 Mayor Resolution No. i i [14 -9(3 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA DESIGNATING MARCH 12 -18, 1989, AS NATIONAL ADULT AND CONTINUING EDUCATION WEEK IN THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA I-) WHEREAS, national statistics indicate that there are 27 million adults who are functionally illiterate and in need of basic skills and instruction, and WHEREAS, there has been a significant growth in the population aged 65 years or older with over 23 million Americans in that age category; and WHEREAS, adult education and continuing education programs offer opportunities for personal growth, job enrichment and career advancement, as well as providing programs for the special needs of displaced workers, high school drop outs, the handicapped, and the older adults; and WHEREAS, throughout the nation at the federal, state, county and local levels of government private and public educational institutions are being commended for their positive impact and highly successful continuing education programs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, as follows: SECTION I. On behalf of all of the citizens of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council publicly commends all public and private educational institutions for providing adult and continuing education programs to the residents of our area. SECTION II. The Common Council hereby declares March 12 through March 18, 1989 as "National Adult and Continuing Education Week in the City of South Bend, Indiana." SECTION III. The Common Council encourages all citizens to celebrate and support such adult and continuing education programs which are "dedicated to the dynamic learning process that never ends."
