BEWARE OF UNLICENSED ABORISTS
The City of South Bend has received calls about unlicensed arborists approaching residents
about cutting down trees. Without proper skills and knowledge unlicensed arborists may put
property, others and themselves in danger.
The City requires anyone who is accepting compensation for tree work be licensed and insured.
Tree work includes:
• leaving the ground for pruning or trimming
• diagnosing and evaluating conditions of trees
• taking down trees in developed areas
If someone is completing tree work on your property and is not licensed or insured, homeowners
could be liable for any damages or injuries that may occur. Licensed arborists have met required
standards.
Licensed arborists are required to carry their license while working. To verify that an arborist has
• license, please visit www.southbendin.gov /renew and click on "license information" and search
• business by name. Residents may also call South Bend's Business License office at 574 -235-
5912 to check if an arborist is licensed.
