PEREGRINE FALCON CHICK TO BE BANDED
Representatives from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will band and identify
the sex of the sole peregrine falcon chick born this year on Wednesday, June 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the
boardroom on the 13th Floor of the County -City Building, 227 W. Jefferson Blvd.
The DNR will also attempt to band a male falcon known as Zeus, who arrived in South Bend
earlier this year. Zeus and Guinevere, a longtime city fixture who started nesting downtown in
2003, together produced four eggs this spring. However, only one of the four eggs hatched. The
DNR will examine the three remaining eggs which were expected to hatch in early May and
explain the process of banding the falcons.
Peregrine falcons are known to keep the same mate unless their partner dies or disappears.
Guinevere's former longtime mate, Zephyr, died last June while hunting downtown.
