LIGHT UP SOUTH BEND EXPANDS WITH LAMP POST PROJECT
South Bend Common Council President Tim Scott (D -1st) and Karen White (D -At Large), in
conjunction with the Department of Public Works announce the expansion of the Light Up South
Bend program with the Lamp Post Project. For a $250 non - refundable fee, the City will provide
installation of a lamp post in a South Bend homeowner's front yard. Residents will incur extra
fees if wiring in excess of 50 feet is required, or a nearby power hookup is not available.
"Residents asked to add more lights to the city and we listened," Councilperson White says.
"Proper lighting is a critical element of maintaining safe neighborhoods."
Light Up South Bend grew out of community meetings held by the Council's Residential
Neighborhood Committee, chaired by Councilperson White and vice chaired by Councilperson
Scott.
"Both to deter crime and to prevent accidents, proper lighting is essential," says Mayor Pete
Buttigieg. "It's been a real collaborative effort that has delivered this important service to more
South Bend neighborhoods."
As part of the Lamp Post Project, residents may choose one of three designs in either black or
rustic bronze. The lamps, designed to prevent "sky glow," also have a sensor to turn the light on
in the evening and off in the morning. Once installed residents assume maintenance of the lamp
post, including replacement of light bulbs.
There are a limited number of lamp posts available and residents are accepted on a first -come,
first- served basis. For information, please call the City's resident service line, 311.
In 2014, Light Up South Bend, in conjunction with Indiana Michigan Power, brought more
streetlights to the LaSalle Park and Keller Park neighborhoods and to the area, bordered by
Michigan and Miami Streets to the west and east, and Indiana and Donmoyer Avenues to the
north and south.
