RESIDENTS INVITED TO OPEN HOUSE TO REVIEW IMPROVEMENTS TO WESTERN AVENUE
The City of South Bend invites residents to an open house Thursday, May 7 from 4:30 to 6:30
pm at the Charles Black Recreation Center, 3419 W. Washington Street, to review plans for
street improvements to be made to Western Avenue throughout the rest of this year.
The open house will provide residents and area businesses an opportunity to review plans for
changes to lane configurations on Western Avenue from Edison Avenue to William Street, and
for streetscape work on the three blocks between Dundee Street and Bendix Drive.
For the entire stretch of Western Avenue, pavement markings will be altered to create a street
with one through -lane in each direction, and a left -turn lane. Also, as space dictates, on- street
parking and bicycle facilities will be added.
"This project helps implement the West Side Main Streets Plan, the revitalization plan for
Western Avenue and Lincolnway West," says Scott Ford, Executive Director of Community
Investment. "As part of the plan, new curbs, sidewalks, and drive approaches will be installed, in
addition to new trees and decorative lighting."
The improvements are part of the City's Smart Streets initiative. Smart Streets is an effort to
improve how South Bend's streets contribute to safe, efficient transportation and the overall
quality of life. Smart Streets projects utilize the complete streets philosophy, providing equal
access to pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders.
