This is a regular part of his service requirement, which also includes one weekend a month. During his two -week reserve duty, to be served in the Washington, DC area, Mayor Buttigieg will be in daily contact with his Administration. A lieutenant in U.S. Navy Reserve, Mayor Buttigieg took a leave of absence to serve in Afghanistan during a seven -month deployment in 2014, earning the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his counterterrorism work. In addition to his Afghanistan deployment, since taking office in 2012, Mayor Buttigieg has continued to fulfill his monthly weekend and annual two - week service to the U.S. Navy Reserve.
