DISCOVER SOUTH BEND SERIES CELEBRATES TRANSPORTATION
As part of yearlong celebrations for South Bend's 150th anniversary, the monthly series
"Discover... South Bend" continues this weekend, Friday, June 12 through Sunday, June 14 by
celebrating transportation with events open to the public and several free of charge.
From 11 am to 8 pm Friday, Transpo, the City of South Bend's Youth Task Force, and the City
of South Bend's Office of Sustainability will present Bus the Bend, a daylong event to promote
exploring the city by bus. The event includes reduced bus fare for participants, tours of
Transpo's LEED - certified facility, and will showcase businesses featuring events and discounts.
From 10 am to 1 pm Saturday, the South Bend International Airport will give tours of its
terminal and new concourse, along with special displays presented by Michiana Area Council of
Governments (MACOG) and the Hesston Steam Museum based in LaPorte.
There will also be City of South Bend vehicles on display including an electric car, a sewer -
vacuum truck, a street sweeper, a dump truck, a front loader, and a compressed natural gas -
powered trash truck. The airport will display an airfield maintenance truck, and an Aircraft
Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle.
From 6:30 to 11:30 am Sunday, the sixth annual Bike the Bend ride will take place allowing
participants to explore the area by bicycle on a 31 -mile route. From 11 am to 6pm, Slide the City
occurs enabling participants to ride down LaSalle Avenue on a 1,000- foot -long slip and slide.
Other ways to Discover Transportation this weekend include Rafting on the East Race, open
Saturday from 12 to 5 pm, and Sunday from 12:30 to 4:30 pm, costing $5 per person per ride.
The History Museum's exhibit "On the Move: Transportation Through the Ages" displays
history of transportation in Michiana. The Museum is open 10 am to 5 pm Saturday, and noon to
5 pm Sunday. Cost is $845 and free for members and ages 5 and younger.
