EVAN SEARS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECEPTION
Mayor Pete Buttigieg will honor Tommy Byszewski and Paul Hurley, co- recipients of the 15th
annual Evan J. Sears Scholarship, at a reception on Tuesday, June 16 at 3 pm on the 14th floor,
County -City Building, 227 W. Jefferson Blvd.
The award honors Evan J. Sears, an intern with the Bureau of Traffic and Lighting, who was
killed in a traffic accident while working on a street project in 1999. The scholarship is open to
any student who has an internship with the city for at least a one summer. To apply interns write
an essay about workplace safety.
Byszewski, a senior majoring in political science at Ball State University, is an intern with the
mayor's office. Hurley, an intern with the city's engineering department, is a senior at the
University of Notre Dame majoring in environmental engineering.
"This scholarship raises awareness about the importance of workplace safety for everyone,"
Buttigieg says. "We are glad to honor Evan's memory through this award that recognizes hard-
working young people just like him."
